Nell

mumAdopt-a-mom in May

Female (will be spayed), Domestic Shorthair

Foster mom's report:

Nell is an exceptionally loving and adaptable cat. When her foster mom came to pick her up Nell greeted her with a purr that lasted most of the way home. She has been a loving and attentive mother, and has taught her kittens to come running for pats and attention when anyone enters their room. Now that they are old enough to be on their own, she enjoys hanging out with Mom, sitting by her feet and waiting for an occasional pat. She gets along well in a houseful of other cats and a dog, but what she really wants is a person of her very own to love.

One of last year's lovely moms

Madonna and her kittens, all of whom have been adopted, were given names of famous singers.  Like her very famous namesake, our Madonna is not at all shy...at least not with our volunteers!    She comes on the run when you enter her "private room", bumps and rubs, and is an affectionate and very chatty girl.

Female (spayed), Shorthair with short tail, possible manx mix
DOB: 11/10/06
One of the momcats needing a home!

This dear little girl already has had kittens of her own, all of whom have been adopted. It's mom's turn now to get some individual love and attention!

From foster mom – February 1, 2008

Mandy is a very sweet girl who came to my foster care right before Christmas. She was timid at first and did not want to be held or cuddled, but she has warmed up very nicely. So, don't be fooled by her shyness at the center and please don't miss the kindness and sparkle in her eyes.  She has been exposed to cats and big kindly dogs and seems to enjoy their company.  I believe she would do well in a home with other pets or in a single pet home.  Won't you let her be your forever friend?

(or in Ella's case-June)

Female (will be spayed), Domestic Shorthair
~DOB: 06/12/07

Ella, who is not much more than a kitten herself, is the proud mom of one little kitten named Rosemary who is a dilute tortie just like mom!  Ella's little one was born on April 24th.  Both will be available for adoption when Ella's work as a mom is finished and the kitten is ready too.  Since Ella is a mom , she is being featured at least on the website in May.  Her photo was taken about one week before she gave birth. Watch for Ella's and Rosemary's debut at the center.  They'd be a cute twosome in the same home!

Ella is now also nursing and caring for a litter of 3 whose mother cat died.  Ella is indeed a sweetheart of a momcat!

Meet Tabitha's Kittens:

Hannah (f)-white/black; black spot on nose

Rachel (f)-black/white, mostly black face

Rebecca (f)-white/black, triangle on nose; long hair

Delilah (f)-black/white; white on face

Samson (m)-white/black; triangle on nose; short hair

 According to foster mom-Tabitha's helper:

Tabitha's kittens are full of energy. They are working on litter training and doing very well. You may notice that Hannah is missing part of her back leg. Unfortunately, she had some complications shortly after she was born, and they were unable to save the damaged leg. However, Hannah is adapting quite nicely. She enjoys playing and running with her siblings. Please don’t overlook her because of her slight ‘limp’, because she is such a beautiful, loving kitten just like her brother and sisters.

Pie

Pie

Male-neutered, Domestic Shorthair
Age: ~2-3 years (March 2008)
Front declawed

Look familiar, you say?   Those who check out our website on a regular basis might think of Mr. Bojangles…maybe Zack….if you go back a couple of years, Martin Luther Kat, a.k.a., Melkat!   Pie is a composite of all these guys…a handsome, lovable and fun cat who is just what the doctor ordered for a lover of BIG cats.  He may try to bite your fingers if you pet him too much, but he stops when you say “no” and, in his foster home, has learned he’s better off just walking away when he’s had enough.    Smart fellow!

Pie’s foster mom tells us:

“It took a few days for Pie to warm up to me at the house, but I think that was in large part due to my having another cat.   When I kept them separated at first and went in to socialize with him, he came right up to me to play.  Within a few days, he was like that anywhere in the apartment.   Pie is very curious, but not troublingly so.  He wants to know what I'm doing in kitchen, for example, but he won't rummage through things left on the counter or stove.  He likes my other cat, I think, more than she likes him right now.  Whenever she's had enough with him, she lets him know vocally.  He stops, then backs away.  He won't confront her or intentionally antagonize her.  Pie is very playful, but like my cat, he doesn't go for regular cat toys.  They both prefer milk container rings!  I have half a dozen or so scattered about the apartment and periodically one gets "attacked".  Pie also prefers my sofa to the cat bed, but then again so does my cat.”

Pie did get into a minor scuffle with two of PAWS’ other big boys, Doc and Wyatt, but we don’t know who started what.   Listening to what foster mom reports, though, we think that if he goes to a home with another cat, Pie would probably do better with a self-confident female than with another male who’s too much like himself!   Although we’ve never seen him around a dog, our guess is that he’d get along fine.

Come meet Pie – he’s a big, friendly hunk ‘o’ love!

Olivia

Very sweet cat needs a special home

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair, FIV+

Had enough of  kitten antics?  Want just one beautiful lap cat?  Go no further…Olivia is looking for you!   Olivia is 3-4 years old, spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations.  Having had a rough start in life, she deserves a quiet, loving, indoor-only home where she can climb into your lap, put her paws on your shoulders, and cuddle to her heart’s content.

Olivia was a stray, constantly being picked on by other roaming cats. A caring family took her in, but their own cats simply would not accept her.  So back outside she went until she could come to PAWS.

Not surprising, given her history of being victimized by other cats, Olivia tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).   But safe at last in her foster home, Olivia is looking great, feeling great, and ready to find a loving family that understands FIV.   To minimize risks to her health, she must be kept indoors and  should not be with other cats unless they, too, are FIV positive.  Olivia cannot transmit the FIV virus to you or to anyone in your family, and she cannot transmit it to a dog or to any other animal except fellow felines.  Please give Olivia a chance.  With your love and just a little extra care, she’ll give you joy, companionship, and much love in return. (See “more information” below for detailed information on FIV).

Olivia may be seen at the Adoption Center Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Shiloh

Shiloh

heart shapeA Lonely Hearts Club Cat

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair
Age: ~ 3 years

Shiloh is another gentle but shy kitty who used to be on the outside looking in.  Like Dahlia, she lived behind our old Adoption Center for quite some time before we were able to convince her to sally forth into a trap just before we moved to our new facility.   For several months, Shiloh alternated residence between a quiet room in the new Center and a foster home.  This allowed her to experience life in a real home with foster dad and his family of cats, but also to slowly warm up to multiple human companions while at the Center.  It took quite awhile, but over time Shiloh grew to love the quiet attentions of one of the volunteers and began to venture out of her enclosure, cautiously come over, rub and sit up and beg for pets.   Soon she was coming out to greet others, and now, sharing a Sunroom with our good buddy, Calvin, Shiloh races up to visitors when they enter the room, circles round and round excitedly, and soaks up all the attention she can get.  She still doesn’t like to be picked up, but that’s coming.

Our shelter supervisor reports that in the evenings, when she thinks no one is watching, Shiloh likes to chase her tail. :)  As it’s getting late and the sun is setting, she and Calvin run around and play, and before long, Shiloh is rolling on the floor grabbing at her tail.   It's a hoot to watch, but it also explains how she mysteriously ended up with sores on her tail about a month ago.   Naturally, we pointed the finger at you-know who!    Sorry, Cal buddy…our bad.   You've been exonerated!

And you, Ms. Shiloh, have come a long way baby!   Take that last teeny, weeny step…the being picked up thing….and you’ll be outta here and into a home of your own.

Bingo

Bingo

Male (neutered), Domestic Shorthair
DOB: 04/01/98, front declawed

Bingo feels a little unsettled when confined at the Adoption Center.  He’s a very vocal fellow who loves to tell you what’s on his mind, and what he’s tellin’ us, loud and clear, is that he wants to relax in a nice quiet home he can call his own.  After being uprooted from his old home, he has spent time at PAWS and at a couple of foster homes, but what he wants and desperately needs is stability.   Although he is a little uneasy around strangers….making things even worse for him at the Center…..once he calms down, he likes having his head scratched and comes running in the morning for breakfast and a nice lap to sit on.  He would be happiest in a loving and patient home with nice soft places for nappin’.

Chloe

Chloe

Heart symbol A Lonely Hearts Club Cat

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair
YOB: 1999

Chloe is a beautiful, trusting and gentle middle-aged gal (8-9 yrs. old). When you enter her room, she welcomes you with purrs and caresses. She loves to be picked up and cuddled and will give you kisses on your face and hands. Foster mom says that Chloe puts people first and food second! She shows no interest whatsoever in eating before she has been hugged.

As humans tend to be more sensitive to temperature as they grow older, Chloe likes to be warm and stays close to heating sources. But the young at heart in her still enjoys playing… gently…with a wand toy. She will be a wonderful companion for someone looking for a lap cat.

Chloe is a “special needs” cat in two respects. When she came to PAWS, she had a sore nose which didn’t respond very well to standard treatment. The lesion eventually was removed, biopsied and diagnosed as pre-cancerous. Chloe does NOT have cancer, but it is important that she be kept indoors and out of the sun. She also has an eye condition known as “entropion”. Entropion is a condition (found in humans too) in which the eyelids turn inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea. This causes irritation, watering and tear evaporation. Chloe’s eyes never close completely and, therefore, are very dry, so an eye lubricant is needed to keep them moist and relieve the irritation. Fortunately, she loves being held and being attended to, so treating her eyes is no big deal at all!

Chloe needs a gentle, caring, trusting person….a mirror of herself!....and daily doses of TLC. Could you be Chloe’s person?

Thank you!

Shansi

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair
DOB: 04/05/01

Shansi arrived at PAWS feeling confused about what was happening to her and looking very thin.  She decided the best thing to do was to hang out under the covers!  But when a volunteer would spend time with her, she couldn't resist both giving and getting affection.  She still likes to hide out a bit at the Center --silly girl -- but she’s ready and anxious to find the special person who will love her forever.  Have some TLC and a home to share with Shansi?

From foster mom – April, 2008:

Shansi is a really sweet, affectionate and friendly cat.  She is very comfortable with new people and comes up to meet them right away.   She likes to snuggle and have a good belly rub.  She’d make a great companion for an adopter of any age or a family with children.   Shansi and my cat are slowly learning to get along, as Shansi is curious but protective of her space.  She would be great as the only cat in the household, but with proper introduction, care and attention, I’m sure she could adjust to living with other cats.

Wylie

Wylie

heart symbol

A Lonely Hearts Club Cat

Male (neutered), Domestic Shorthair
YOB: 2004

July 10, 2007

From Wylie's foster mom:

This handsome tuxedo is quite an armful, but a very lovable armful and a classic guy.  Wylie is a very “comfortable” cat, not too active and not too stodgy.  He loves companionship. He really watches the people around him and has a beautiful, clear green gaze from his charming little triangular face.   He’s cuddly and likes to be near and touching his humans, although he isn’t what I’d call clingy either.  Since he’s kind of quiet, I’d hate for someone not to notice him in the crowd, because he’s a really special kind of fellow.  I think he’d easily be able to adapt to other cats in a household.

Because of a previous infection, Wylie has a higher risk of developing urinary tract infections than the average cat.  So his future companion will need to keep watch for any signs that he’s retaining urine (which could cause an obstruction), and feed him a prescription diet to prevent that.   His current diet seems to suit him well and he likes both dry and canned food, with a slight preference for canned.

Update - January 2008

Like so many cats who spend the week in foster homes, Wylie really dislikes coming to the Center and wonders why in the world he has to go through this routine every weekend.   As a result, he can sometimes become a bit "snarfy" with people who are interested in him.   To avoid gettin' on Wylie's nerves, foster mom advises prospective adopters not to hold him for too long -- a little is okay, but even at home, he has his limits.   Wylie also doesn't like to have his fur ruffled for too long at a time.  He's one of these fellows who likes attention and often seeks it out, but he'll let you know...with a swat...when he's had enough.

Lacey

Lovely Lacey needs a special home

Female (spayed), Domestic Medium Hair, ~3-4 yrs. old, FeLV+

Pretty Lacey is a gentle, kind and sweet young gal.  She’s very people-oriented, gets along well with the two resident dogs in her foster home, and loves to sleep snuggled up on foster mom’s pillow, totally unfazed by the big dogs at the foot of the bed!   She likes perching on the windowsills, carefully checking the action outside, and has a good time playing with her favorite toys…..and she DOES have favorites.

Lacey occasionally gets a little “rammy” during play, but she knows to stop the roughhouse when foster mom firmly tells her “enough!”  She is smart and responsive, so she probably could adapt to most any situation given proper instruction.

Lacey tested positive for the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) about a year ago, but shows no signs of illness.  Since some cats are able to mount an immune response to this virus, we plan to retest her very soon to see if she might be one of the lucky ones.   Cross your paws!

If Lacey remains FeLV positive, however, she will need an indoor only home to protect her own health as well as to prevent the spread of the virus to other neighborhood cats.  She should be an only cat unless other resident cats also are FeLV positive.  FeLV cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs, only to other cats.  Good nutrition and semi-annual wellness exams will be important for Lacey, and at the first sign that she may not be feeling well, a trip to the vet is advised.   Because FeLV may weaken Lacey’s immune system, early treatment will give her a far greater chance of staying well.

Lovely Lacey has no idea why it is taking so long to find her very own family.  She feels fine, has an enormous amount of love to give and deserves to live a full and happy life.  Could you be the one to give Lacey that chance?

(See “more information” below for detailed information on FeLV).

Calvin

Calvin

heart symbol

A Lonely Hearts Club cat

Domestic Shorthair, Male (neutered)
DOB: 08/02/99

Well, he’s done it again!   Calvin….our feline equivalent of the famous “Calvin” (and tiger Hobbes)….has changed the rules.   Our Center bad boy, at least while AT the Center and when confined for too long, took a 180 during the week of the move to our new facility.  He designated himself mascot of the move, thoroughly enjoying his week-long freedom among the many volunteers packing our belongings for the big day.  He delighted in being the only cat asked to stay and help, and he especially pigged out on all the attention paid to him when volunteers needed a “kitty fix” and a break from the drudge.   Calvin is, after all, an attention-seeker, and sole, undivided attention was all it took to transform bad boy into a bump and rub, openly affectionate love!

The “new and improved” Calvin was moved to one of the large, open Sunrooms at the new Adoption and Education Center.   Furnished with climbers and baskets and tunnels and beds, scratchers and toys galore, Calvin claimed the room and everything in it as his own….even his, ahem, “cage”…..which was left open 24/7 for him to come and go as he pleased.   "Now THIS is more like it," he told us, "a big room all my own, with all this stuff…WOW! "   He relaxed in the new beds, basked in the attention of the volunteers who stopped to visit and, of course, continued to amuse himself sloshing around in his water….with no one yelling at him.

With the Grand Opening coming the next weekend, we all wondered how Calvin would adjust to sharing “his” room with other cats, all of whom had been fostered through the transition.   Surprise, surprise – the new Calvin appears to be here to stay!  He spent a good part of the Grand Opening closed in his cage without a complaint.   Only Dahlia stayed beyond the weekend and, with both cage doors left open, Calvin actually enjoyed her company….well….he enjoyed jumping into her cubicle and stealing her food!   So that Cal doesn’t gorge himself into oblivion, Dahlia was moved across the hall and loverboy has “his” room all to himself again.   And he continues to delight volunteers with his fun-loving, but also very affectionate “I’m really glad to see ya” demeanor.   Atta boy, Calvin!    We like these new rules!

Is our Calvin the feline descendant of comic strip "Calvin"?   Sure is!   Click for "more information about the "old Calvin" and enjoy.   :)

Female (spayed), Domestic Longhair

From Debussy's foster mom:

"Debussy is a beautiful long-haired cat, the last kitten from a litter of other little composers.  Debussy is a darling cat looking for a dependable and loving owner.  She composes her own music via her sing-song talking but she knows when it is bed time and is as quiet as a mouse.  She will need to have her coat brushed regularly, which she *loves*.  She is very good about getting her nails trimmed also.  She mostly enjoys hanging out in the lower traffic areas of the house although she does enjoy bird and squirrel-watching from the windows. Right now, she is not a lap cat but perhaps with the right person she could be.  Will you be the duet partner for Debussy to practice "Clair de lune" with?"

Handsome and quiet guy needs a special home

Male (neutered), Domestic Shorthair, FIV+
Age: 2-3 years old as of February 2008

Spring is here!   Welcome Spring by welcoming ME into your home!  My name is Elliot.   I’m a handsome fellow (so they tell me) and a good guy (though I’m a bit confused and people-shy right now).  And although I’m safe and warm in my foster home, I’d really like to find a caring family of my own.   Life hasn’t been very good to me so far....I really can’t tell you where I came from, but I spent the better part of this nasty, bone-chilling winter out in the wind, wet and cold.  I was what everyone calls a “stray”.   Luckily, a young couple took me in for a little while and saw to it that I got to PAWS.  But that’s only the beginning of my story.

First thing PAWS did was to test me for a couple of the more common feline diseases.  As fate would have it, I tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).   I'm feeling great now (the ugly sore you see on my nose has healed) and chances are I'll be feelin' good for a long time to come.   But to minimize risks to my health and to the health of other cats, I must be kept indoors and  should not have contact with other cats unless they, too, are FIV positive.   I cannot transmit the FIV virus to you or to anyone else in your family, and I cannot transmit it to a dog or to any other animal except fellow felines.   Please  take the time to find out more about me.   I won’t give you any trouble.  I ask only for your love, kindness and understanding,  and I WILL come out from under the bed eventually.  :)   Think sunshine and flowers, think new life....a new life for Elliot!

Shamrock

Male-neutered, Domestic Medium Hair
~DOB: 08/07

Just take a look at my eyes and you’ll see why they call me “Shamrock”!   That, and because I came to PAWS just a few days before the month of shamrocks, the wearing ‘o’ the green, green beer, and ….oh don’t worry, I don’t indulge in any of that sudsy stuff.   Water…and maybe a wee bit of catnip…that's all it takes to get me feeling frisky and rarin’ to go.

Why just this past weekend, I was one of the cats featured in PAWS’ Fashion for Compassion Show.   Yeah, me….walkin’ down the runway, just like the models.  Well, not really – one of the volunteers insisted upon carrying me, much as I’d rather have gone it alone with my tail held high.   This was quite an adventure, but I was told I “done good”.

And now another new experience!   Today I was taken to Wiscoy and I’m not entirely sure what to expect.    But the other PAWS cats and my foster mom and dad told me it’s an honor to be here.  They said I’ll get lots of attention and if I’m good, I might even find a permanent home.   One thing my foster parents said to be sure to tell you is that I get along very well with “Friday” and “Desi”, the resident cat and dog.  We get along SO well in fact, that I went a bit nutso when I was “quarantined” for a few days after being 'neuterized' and couldn’t be with them. I’d really, REALLY like to have a buddy in my new home!  Cat or dog okay.

Age: ~ 1 year (in April 2008)

If you're looking for a cat who loves people and loves to give and receive attention, I'm the cat for you!

I recently shared a room with another kitty in my foster home, but she found her forever family and isn't here anymore.  We got along fine, and I didn’t mind sharing my space with her.   I love people--children and adults--so I would adapt quite easily to most any situation.

Won’t you give me the opportunity to be your forever kitty?  I will keep you company and be a great companion!

Love,
Caramel (with a little help from my foster mom)

Snuffy

Female, Domestic Shorthair
~DOB: 11/23/07

Foster mom has nice things to say about this little girl already:

"Good things come in small packages," and this tiny package is totally good.  She's easy on the eyes, plays hard, and then curls up in your lap or your arms for a little snooze.  A large measure of affection & fun in a small package!

Adoption approved - Snuffy is no longer available

Creamsicle

Male (neutered), Domestic Shorthair
DOB: 02/23/05

You will lose your heart to Creamsicle.  He looks as though he's seen some tough times in his short life, but he is still so loving with all of the PAWS volunteers.   The only thing he might love as much is his food.

Adoption approved - Creamsicle is no longer available

A Lonely Hearts Club Cat

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair
~DOB: 04/01/05

Dahlia: a flower popular in gardens and arrangements, which blooms with spectacular showy and colorful flowers when tended with care and planted in a sunny area.
Dahlia: a cat enjoying her life indoors, who purrs in contentment when showered with love as she shows off her luxuriously soft and beautiful calico coat in a sunny window.

For quite awhile, Dahlia was on the outside of the window at the old PAWS adoption center. She never quite had the trust to come near and allow us to pick her up. But when we were getting ready to move and finally seduced her into a cat-friendly trap, she did not resist our affection and attentions - as you can see from her photos! This sweet girl probably had a home sometime in the past and was not a truly feral cat as we for so long had believed.

In a foster home, while waiting to move into one of the Sunrooms in our new PAWS facility, Dahlia spent her days curled up in her window bed and on her foster mom’s desk. There she lapped up all the attention her foster mom could give....like a flower that has been dry for too long drinks up fresh water. She left her foster home before she could fully blossom, but with a patient and loving adopter, she will surely bloom.

Are you ready to pluck our beautiful Dahlia and let her purr her way into your heart?

Sadie

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair

Sadie is a friendly and sweet cat ready for her very own forever home.  She loved hanging out in this red fabric cat cube at the center.  She'd probably be happy relaxing anywhere.  A really nice cat!

Thank you!

Jilly

Female (spayed), Domestic Shorthair
~DOB: 08/10/07

Jilly is a gentle and quiet girl, still a little shy and unsure about us humans.  In her foster home, she is affectionate and loving, well mannered and obedient, curious and playful, but it has taken time and patience for her to adjust to a home environment.

She gets along very well with other felines, in fact, so well that it may hinder her learning to trust and bond with her human family members.  Jilly might do best as an only cat until she forges a solid relationship with her person(s).  At that point, you could think about introducing another cat if you think a feline friend would be good company for her.  But for now, Jilly is looking for a forever home that will patiently give her the time she needs to relax and enjoy being with her people.

Kittens and their moms are often available

Kittens are cute and their moms are too, but it can be difficult to home a seemingly endless supply of homeless cats.

PAWS gets many calls about momcats, some not much more than babies themselves, and their litters. Moms and kittens alike need forever homes.

Please remind all your friends and neighbors to spay and neuter.  It's such an important message.

Please consider volunteering or providing a foster home.

Terminology in listings...

"Application pending" means that an application has been submitted to adopt this cat. If you are interested in this cat, please keep checking back or fill out an application yourself since occasionally applications are withdrawn or circumstances prevent it from being finalized.

"Application approved" means that the application has gone through but the ownership transfer paperwork is not yet finalized. The cat is still at the Center or in a foster home until that is completed.

"Adopted" means that the cat is in its new forever home!

"Adoption approved - no longer available" means that the application has gone through and the cat is living with its adoptive family, but the ownership transfer has not taken place for one of several reasons, e.g., a health problem is still being assessed and/or treated by PAWS; a vaccination provided by PAWS has not yet been given; the cat is at least 6 mo. old (7 mo. for males) and will be spayed or neutered by PAWS before the official adoption takes place.

"Long-term Foster" means that the cat is living in a foster home on a continual, although sometimes temporary basis for varied reasons. The cat is not brought to the adoption center on weekends.  Please consult one of the cat program coordinators for up-to-date adoptability status.
